I am lucky enough to say that my toddler loves books. I really hope that her love for books continues to grow. Evidence has shown that kids with active exposure to language have social and educational advantages over their peers. Reading is one of the best exposures to language.
Reading to babies and toddlers sets the foundation for later independent reading. We have been reading with our daughter since she was a baby.
My daughter transitioned to her own room at 3 months old. As a new mom, this was a terrifying and exciting time. I wanted to ensure that she felt safe and secure before leaving the room. One way that eased my mind was to read to her before bedtime. My husband would sit on the ottoman of the nursing chair while I held her. Every night was a new book. We chose books with bright colors and fairy tale endings.
Then REALITY hit. I was tired. Every night stories was no longer happening. Not to say this routine did not continue but it just did not happen every night.
As my daughter got older we continued to give her access to books. I truly believe that this is what has allowed her love for books to continue to grow. We have made books available to her all through out the home. We continue to buy new books and peak her interest. We have books in her playroom, her bedroom and in the main living room area.
We try to purchase new books that relate to a time or an event that she is going through or a part of. After her 1st birthday party and she was overloaded with gifts we purchased a book (at the Dollar Store) that talks about saying thank you and the importance of it.
We find books in many different ways- the Dollar Store, Thrift Store & Bookroo. Reading is an investment in your child’s future. Reading makes for smart, emotionally healthy, and confident kids. Bookroo makes reading easy. Bookroo is a book subscription service for children. Each box contains either 3 board books or 2 picture books and the combined retail value of the books always exceeds the subscription price! Check out Bookroo for yourself and use the code PIECES. This will give you the 3rd month free with any multi-month subscription!
This month we received copies of Sleepover with Beatrice & Bear and Blue Chicken. They were each so adorably wrapped in high quality wrapping paper. My daughter thought that it was Christmas or her birthday getting the chance to unwrap her monthly present. The retail value truly does exceed the monthly subscription cost.
Do you have any favorite stories that you read to your child? Let me know! We are always looking to expand our collection!
