Holiday traditions give your children something to look forward to during the Christmas season. Take a look at some of these popular family Christmas traditions that you should begin doing with your family.
Baking Holiday Cookies
Baking your grandmother’s recipe of holiday cookies will not only be wonderful to pass down to your children and grandchildren, but you’ll catch yourself reminiscing about grandma’s house. Or maybe you could track down a recipe that your whole family enjoys and start your own tradition.

Make Christmas Candy
Do you know how to make Christmas candies? Chances are, you may not. No need to panic. There are many easy Christmas candies recipes that your children will be asking you for as soon as it gets cold out. Your whole family can enjoy making them together and hand them out to friends and family. A tradition doesn’t get any sweeter than this!
Enjoy Christmas Lights
Many families enjoy driving through the best neighborhoods that really go all-in during the Christmas season with decorations. It’s extra special going when there’s a fresh coat of snow on the ground that makes it more magical. To finish off the night, head into town for a sweet treat that your family has been looking forward to.

Find the Christmas Pickle
This was one of my family’s favorite Christmas traditions growing up. That’s because we had a huge Christmas tree that was decked out many dazzling decorations and ornaments. The person that found the Christmas pickle would get a small no-named gift underneath the tree. My brother and I would always try and cheat by finding it beforehand, not realizing that mom or dad would relocate it before the game.

Watch Your Favorite Christmas Classic
Maybe your family enjoys watching a Christmas classic once a year? A Christmas Carol, It’s a Wonderful Life and A Charlie Brown Christmas were ones that my family enjoyed watching while I was growing up. Home Alone is a classic that never gets old. The Disney+ app now gives you access to all the nostalgic Christmas movies.
Donate to a Local Food Bank
Gathering food and warm clothing while donating it to a local food bank or homeless shelter, is a way for your family to give back and really understand what the Christmas spirit is all about. Your family could even help feed families so that your children might see how good they have it, and also learn to love those that are less fortunate.
Adopt a Family
Choosing to adopt a family around Christmas time is another wonderful way for your family to make another family’s Christmas special. That family might not have a good Christmas if your family doesn’t come to the rescue. Not only do they need toys for their little ones, but clothing and basic items like toothbrushes and hair bows. You can find a family at a local non-profit organization.
Start Your Own Silly Ritual
There’s no wrong answer when it comes to starting your own holiday tradition. Come up with your own clever idea that’s fun and make it a tradition that never stops.
These are a number of traditions that might give the holidays a jump-start that’s much needed in your family. What other traditions does your family do around Christmas time that didn’t make this list? We’d love to hear about it.
